What is personal lubricant and why should I use it?
Personal lubricant is any medium which reduces friction during all manner of sexual activity which could lead to irritation, pain and rupturing of skin. Using a personal lubricant will increase comfort during intercourse. If you are using a condom, a personal lubricant is essential in highly reducing the risk of breakage or tearing. A flavoured lubricant is a tasty way to enhance oral sex. Lubricant can also reduce the chance of STIs by cutting down on the risk of tiny tears in skin that promote their transmission. Sex should be fun and enjoyable – personal lubricant is the best way to ensure your enhanced pleasure!
WHEN IS LUBE APPROPRIATE FOR USE?
Many types of personal lubricants are available, namely: water, silicone or oil-based. The purpose of a personal lubricant is to reduce friction during all manner of sexual activity so as to avoid discomfort that could lead to irritation, pain and/or skin rupturing. If you are using a condom, a water or silicone-based lubricant is essential in highly reducing the risk of breakage or tearing. Personal lubricants also help decrease the chance of STI transmission by making tiny tears in the skin less likely. Overall, sex should be fun and enjoyable. Applying personal lubricant is probably the best way to ensure enhanced pleasure, greater comfort and safety.
HOW DO I USE PERSONAL LUBRICANT?
There is no wrong way to use personal lubricant. Apply as much as you deem necessary, to both your genitals as well as whatever it is you intend on inserting, and reapply as much and as often as you feel you require. After use, a water-based lubricant will wash away easily.
I’M TRYING TO CONCEIVE - CAN I USE YOUR LUBE?
Although none of our formulations contain a spermicide, any lubrication (including saliva) can inhibit the motility of sperm. Knowing this, if you choose to use Assegai while trying to conceive, we suggest using only a small amount and adding more if needed and discontinuing use if conception is not achieved in a reasonable amount of time. Note though that it is always advised to consult with your gynaecologist or primary care physician, and to follow their recommendation.
I’M A WOMAN. WILL LUBRICANT EXACERBATE CANDIDIASIS?
Yeast infections are caused when the delicate balance of vaginal flora is disrupted. Our lubricants are adjusted to be slightly acidic, matching vaginal pH. According to the US CDC, nearly 75% of adult women have experienced a yeast infection. Anecdotally we have not heard from women encountering problems with our lubricants. Even so, exercise caution if you are prone to infection or currently experiencing an outbreak, and we recommend that you speak to your doctor or gynaecologist for further advice.
I’M A HETEROSEXUAL MAN. SHOULDN’T I BE ABLE TO MAKE MY PARTNER “WET” NATURALLY?
Vaginal dryness can occur for a number of reasons, including medication, menopause, hormonal changes, after childbirth, during breastfeeding, stress, or even harsh soaps, and most women have experienced this at some point in their life. This being said, many women enjoy the use of lubricant even if they are not currently experiencing dryness – this is not a reflection on your masculinity or your ability to arouse your partner. Longer sessions of play will also necessitate extra lubrication.
